The Legend of the Order of the Dragon
The Order of the Dragon symbol is steeped in history and legend. It is believed that Vlad the Impaler, better known as Dracula, wore this image as a medallion during his lifetime. The Order of the Dragon was founded in 1408 by Sigismund, the King of Hungary, with the purpose of defending the Cross and fighting against the enemies of Christianity, especially the Ottoman Turks.
A Symbol of Power and Loyalty
Dracula derived his name from the Order of the Dragon, with Dracula meaning 'Son of the Dragon'. Vlad's father, Vlad II, received the surname of Dracul, meaning dragon, when he was inducted into the Order in 1431. Dracula himself was inducted into the Order when he was just five years old. Like traditional signet rings, the area behind the signet has been carved out slightly to reduce weight and increase comfort.
